The Passing Heatwave.

Yesterday afternoon I sat in my garden, or what is left of it, just enjoying the cool change that had finally blown our way. It seems like forever the hotter than hell heatwave was with us. I think the last day of it Renmark hit the 48 mark. My heart went out to them.

Finally plucked up the courage to get my vegie seeds out again and start replanting what can be this time of the year. Sure makes you understand what the market gardeners must go through each time they have losses from either heat or frost.

They don't know the official number of deaths here from the heatwave, they had to make another makeshift morgue in the hospital, as it was full. With that kind of prolonged heat, you can understand how the sick and elderly succumb to it. Apparently some poor buggers were turning their air conditioners on with the heat setting on, not realising what they were doing. Then, I guess, assuming they just weren't working properly with the heat.

Last night when watching the news the true devastation of the bushfires in Victoria hit home. We were very lucky, we were spared the arsonists attacks here. Its absolutely shocking. So many deaths. So many people homeless, left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Whole towns have been wiped out. The amount of animals also killed with this bushfire must be astronomical. I sat til late on the computer watching the different videos of news footage that were emerging, trying to hold back the tears, not always succeeding. The stories also of heroism, during the fires, also was very heart wrenching. What an incredibly dark weekend for Australia.

The photo is of the railway lines that buckled from the heat, naturally the train services were suspended for some time after this. The photo is taken from an article I was reading about it. The other photo really needs no explanation. Apparently some of these fires were the work of arsonists.

  2. Hi Shiram, yes nature certainly did unleash her fury, they say the body count will go much higher yet, won't know for a couple of days yet. They are still searching the burnt out houses. Most of the fires were deliberately lit, I wouldn't want to be in that firebugs shoes when caught.
Two states up lives have been lost in floods. If only some of that rain had reached further down a couple of days ago.
